Arrival in Moshi

  • Airport Transfer: Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Moshi.
  • Briefing: Meet your guide for a pre-trek briefing and gear check. Prepare for the trek with a good night’s rest.

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

  • Elevation: 1,870 meters (6,135 feet) to 2,720 meters (8,923 feet)
  • Distance: 8 km (5 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
  • Habitat: Montane Forest

Begin your trek at Marangu Gate after completing the necessary registration formalities. Hike through the lush montane forest, where you can spot various species of birds and colobus monkeys. Arrive at Mandara Hut in the afternoon, with time to explore the Maundi Crater for panoramic views of northern Tanzania and Kenya.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

  • Elevation: 2,720 meters (8,923 feet) to 3,720 meters (12,205 feet)
  • Distance: 12 km (7.5 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland

Continue your ascent through the forest until the trail opens into heather and moorland. Enjoy stunning views of the mountain peaks and the surrounding landscape. Arrive at Horombo Hut, where you’ll spend the night. This day helps with acclimatization as you move higher up the mountain.

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

  • Optional Hike: Hike to Zebra Rocks (4,020 meters/13,189 feet) and back
  • Distance: 5 km (3.1 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 2-3 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland

Spend an extra day at Horombo Hut for acclimatization. Take a short hike to Zebra Rocks, named for their distinctive black and white stripes. This additional day is crucial for increasing your chances of successfully reaching the summit.

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

  • Elevation: 3,720 meters (12,205 feet) to 4,703 meters (15,430 feet)
  • Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Continue your trek through the alpine desert, passing the last water point at 4,130 meters (13,550 feet). The landscape becomes more barren and the air thinner as you approach Kibo Hut. Rest and prepare for the final ascent to the summit, which begins around midnight.

Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

  • Elevation: 4,703 meters (15,430 feet) to 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) and down to 3,720 meters (12,205 feet)
  • Distance: 21 km (13 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 12-15 hours
  • Habitat: Arctic to Moorland

Begin your summit attempt around midnight. The trail to the summit is steep and challenging, passing the Hans Meyer Cave (5,150 meters/16,896 feet) and Gilman’s Point (5,681 meters/18,638 feet). Reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, at sunrise. After celebrating and taking photos, descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing to Horombo Hut.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

  • Elevation: 3,720 meters (12,205 feet) to 1,870 meters (6,135 feet)
  • Distance: 20 km (12.4 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland to Montane Forest

Descend through the moorland and montane forest back to Marangu Gate. Collect your summit certificates and meet your transfer vehicle. Head back to Moshi for a celebratory meal and relaxation.
