The trek begins at Umbwe Gate (1,600 meters / 5,250 feet) with registration and a short briefing. The trail ascends steeply through dense rainforest, offering a chance to see colobus monkeys and a variety of birds. The path can be slippery and muddy. The day ends at Umbwe Cave Camp (2,850 meters / 9,350 feet).
Leaving the rainforest, the trail becomes rockier and less steep as it enters the moorland zone. Stunning views of the Western Breach and the glaciers of Kibo are visible. The trek continues to Barranco Camp (3,950 meters / 12,960 feet), situated in a valley below the Barranco Wall.
The day starts with the challenging climb of the Barranco Wall. Despite appearing daunting, the climb is manageable and offers some fun scrambling sections. After the wall, the trail undulates through the alpine desert to Karanga Camp (4,040 meters / 13,255 feet).
The trek to Barafu Camp is relatively short but steep, passing through the barren, wind-swept alpine desert. Barafu Camp (4,670 meters / 15,330 feet) is the base camp for the summit attempt. The afternoon is spent resting and preparing for the early morning summit push.
The summit attempt starts around midnight. The trail is steep and challenging, passing between Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. After reaching Stella Point (5,739 meters / 18,829 feet), the trail continues along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters / 19,341 feet), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, the descent begins back to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continues down to Mweka Camp (3,110 meters / 10,204 feet) through the alpine desert and into the rainforest.
The final descent takes you through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,640 meters / 5,380 feet). After signing out at the gate, you will receive a certificate for successfully reaching Uhuru Peak or Stella Point. Transport back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha will be provided.
