Continue trekking through the moorland, with expansive views of Kibo and the eastern ice fields on the crater rim. Reach Second Cave for an overnight stay. This day’s trek is moderate, allowing for gradual acclimatization.
Depart Second Cave and trek towards Kikelewa Camp. The trail becomes steeper as you traverse through the moorland and up to the Kikelewa Cave. The scenery is increasingly spectacular, with giant groundsels and lobelias.
Begin the day with a short but steep climb up grassy slopes, rewarded by superb views. Leave the vegetation behind shortly before reaching the next camp at Mawenzi Tarn, situated in a cirque beneath the spires of Mawenzi. Spend the afternoon acclimatizing and exploring the surrounding area.
Cross the lunar desert of the “Saddle” between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo Hut. This camp, located at the base of the Kibo crater wall, is your base for the final ascent to the summit. Spend the evening resting and preparing for the summit attempt.
Begin the final ascent around midnight. The trail to the summit is steep and challenging, passing the Hans Meyer Cave at 5,150 meters (16,896 feet). Reach Gillman’s Point (5,681 meters/18,638 feet) on the crater rim and continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement and taking photos, descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing to Horombo Hut.
Descend through the moorland and montane forest back to Marangu Gate. Collect your summit certificates and meet your transfer vehicle. Head back to Moshi for a celebratory meal and relaxation.
