Arrival in Moshi

  • Airport Transfer: Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Moshi.
  • Briefing: Meet your guide for a pre-trek briefing and gear check. Prepare for the trek with a good night’s rest.

Day 1: Moshi to Rongai Gate to Simba Camp

  • Elevation: 1,950 meters (6,398 feet) to 2,600 meters (8,530 feet)
  • Distance: 8 km (5 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
  • Habitat: Montane Forest

After breakfast, drive to the Rongai Gate near the Kenyan border. Complete registration formalities and begin your trek through farmlands and pine forests, gradually ascending to Simba Camp. Enjoy the peaceful environment and the views over the Kenyan plains.

Day 2: Simba Camp to Second Cave

  • Elevation: 2,600 meters (8,530 feet) to 3,450 meters (11,319 feet)
  • Distance: 9 km (5.6 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 6-7 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland

Continue trekking through the moorland, with expansive views of Kibo and the eastern ice fields on the crater rim. Reach Second Cave for an overnight stay. This day’s trek is moderate, allowing for gradual acclimatization.

Day 3: Second Cave to Kikelewa Camp

  • Elevation: 3,450 meters (11,319 feet) to 3,600 meters (11,811 feet)
  • Distance: 6 km (3.7 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland

Depart Second Cave and trek towards Kikelewa Camp. The trail becomes steeper as you traverse through the moorland and up to the Kikelewa Cave. The scenery is increasingly spectacular, with giant groundsels and lobelias.

Day 4: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp

  • Elevation: 3,600 meters (11,811 feet) to 4,330 meters (14,206 feet)
  • Distance: 5 km (3.1 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Begin the day with a short but steep climb up grassy slopes, rewarded by superb views. Leave the vegetation behind shortly before reaching the next camp at Mawenzi Tarn, situated in a cirque beneath the spires of Mawenzi. Spend the afternoon acclimatizing and exploring the surrounding area.

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut

  • Elevation: 4,330 meters (14,206 feet) to 4,703 meters (15,430 feet)
  • Distance: 8 km (5 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Cross the lunar desert of the “Saddle” between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo Hut. This camp, located at the base of the Kibo crater wall, is your base for the final ascent to the summit. Spend the evening resting and preparing for the summit attempt.

Day 6: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

  • Elevation: 4,703 meters (15,430 feet) to 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) and down to 3,720 meters (12,205 feet)
  • Distance: 22 km (13.7 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 10-15 hours
  • Habitat: Arctic to Moorland

Begin the final ascent around midnight. The trail to the summit is steep and challenging, passing the Hans Meyer Cave at 5,150 meters (16,896 feet). Reach Gillman’s Point (5,681 meters/18,638 feet) on the crater rim and continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement and taking photos, descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing to Horombo Hut.

Day 7: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

    • Elevation: 3,720 meters (12,205 feet) to 1,870 meters (6,135 feet)
    • Distance: 20 km (12.4 miles)
    • Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
    • Habitat: Moorland to Montane Forest

Descend through the moorland and montane forest back to Marangu Gate. Collect your summit certificates and meet your transfer vehicle. Head back to Moshi for a celebratory meal and relaxation.
